Myleus rhomboidalis
Also known as: Rhomboid Myleus
Origin: Amazon basin and Guianas, South America
Myleus rhomboidalis presents the archetypal disc-shaped serrasalmid body — deep, laterally compressed, and perfectly symmetrical — in classic silver with subtle iridescent highlights. It is widespread across the Amazon basin and Guiana Shield rivers, forming schools in open water habitats.
In the aquarium it is straightforward to maintain on a herbivorous diet and is entirely peaceful. It serves as an excellent schooling display species and provides an elegant, unfussy complement to bolder patterned serrasalmids when kept in mixed-species groups.
Not subject to piranha ownership restrictions.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard; broadly adaptable. Tank: Minimum 500L for a school of 5+; open mid-water space; avoid soft-leaved plants. Feeding: Herbivore; spirulina flake and pellets, blanched greens, vegetables. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; rarely bred in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent mixed-group schooler with other Myleus and Metynnis species.
