Campylomormyrus rhynchophorus
Origin: Congo River basin, Central Africa
Campylomormyrus rhynchophorus is a rare and intriguing weakly electric fish from the Congo River basin, featuring a highly elongated snout curled downward at the tip, perfectly adapted for extracting invertebrates from substrate crevices. Like other mormyrids, it generates and detects weak electrical pulses to navigate and communicate in murky waters. A dark, heavily planted aquarium with sandy substrate and caves best replicates its natural habitat.
Minimum 250 L species tank with fine sand substrate, dense planting, caves, and very low light. pH 6.0–7.0, GH 2–10, KH 0–5, temperature 24–28°C. Feed live and frozen invertebrates: bloodworm, tubifex, small earthworms. Nocturnal — most active after lights-out. Keep alone or with large peaceful species; can be aggressive with conspecifics. Highly sensitive to electrical devices and strong currents.
