Corydoras ricketti
Also known as: Rickett's Cory, Guyana Pepper Cory
Origin: Guyana
Corydoras ricketti is a sturdy, medium-sized cory from Guyana with a classic 'pepper' pattern — fine dark brown speckles and small spots distributed evenly across a cream to tan body. This straightforward but attractive appearance, combined with excellent hardiness, makes it a solid choice for aquarists interested in Guyanese species.
In its natural habitat it inhabits lowland streams and floodplain pools in the Guiana lowlands, where water conditions can vary considerably with season. This ecological flexibility translates well to aquarium life, where it tolerates a broader range of water parameters than more specialised Amazon cories. It is rarely traded but periodically available through Guyanese exporters.
Keep in groups of six or more with good filtration, a fine substrate, and regular water changes. The species is an enthusiastic feeder and will accept most sinking foods readily. Its robustness and adaptability make it a good choice for intermediate keepers stepping beyond the most common cory species.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–26°C; adaptable and forgiving of modest variation. Tank: 80 L with sand or fine gravel, plant cover, and hiding spots among driftwood. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen Tubifex, bloodworm, and blanched vegetables; an eager feeder. Breeding: Typical cory spawning; cool water change trigger; robust species that may breed without much conditioning. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; tolerant and peaceful with all standard tropical tankmates.
