Crenicichla saxatilis
Also known as: Ringtail Pike Cichlid, Saxatilis Pike
Origin: South America
Crenicichla saxatilis is one of the most commonly encountered pike cichlids in the hobby, found across a wide range in northern South America. Its bold lateral stripe and caudal ring patterning make it easy to identify. More adaptable than many Crenicichla species, it is a good introduction to the pike cichlid group.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard water. Tank: Minimum 350L, large flat rocks, driftwood caves, and open swimming lanes. Feeding: Carnivore; live or frozen fish, prawns, shrimp, and meaty cichlid pellets. Behaviour: Aggressive; males are highly territorial and will fight conspecifics. Compatibility: Best kept alone or with a well-matched mate in a very large tank.
