Rhinogobio typus
Also known as: River Rhinogobio Loach, Typus Gudgeon
Origin: China
Rhinogobio typus is a slender and pointed-snouted cyprinid from the Yangtze River system with ecological associations with fast-flowing, well-oxygenated riverine habitats. Despite not being a true loach, its riverine habits and substrate-oriented behaviour make it a fascinating addition to hillstream-themed aquaria. It feeds by sifting through gravel and sandy substrate and requires moderate to strong water movement.
Water: 18-24°C, pH 7.0-7.8, hard and well-oxygenated, moderate flow. Tank: Minimum 100 L, fine gravel and smooth pebbles, moderate current. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, substrate sifting feeder. Behaviour: Active schooler along substrate; forages by sucking at gravel surface. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable with medium hillstream and cool-water community fish.
