Rutilus rutilus
Also known as: Roach, Common Roach, European Roach
Origin: Europe
The Roach is one of the most abundant freshwater fish in Europe, found in virtually every lowland lake, pond, and river from Britain to the Ural Mountains. Its silver body, orange-red eyes, and red pelvic and anal fins make it more colourful than its 'coarse fish' reputation suggests.
Juvenile and sub-adult Roach are well-suited to large coldwater aquariums, where they form attractive schools in the middle and upper water column. They are adaptable to a wide range of water conditions and temperatures.
Adults grow large and are ultimately best accommodated in very large tanks or ponds. In a river biotope setting with other European natives they create a natural, dynamic display.
Water: 5–22°C, pH 6.5–8.0, GH 5–18; adaptable; cooler temperatures preferred. Tank: minimum 200 L for sub-adults; robust filtration; open midwater swimming space. Feeding: omnivore — floating and sinking pellets, flake, blanched vegetables, bloodworm. Breeding: spring spawner over aquatic vegetation; requires very large space and seasonal cycling. Compatibility: peaceful; best with other similarly sized European coldwater species.
