The Roach (Rutilus rutilus) is one of Western Europe's most widespread freshwater fish, with a silver body and distinctive red-orange fins and iris. A peaceful schooling species well adapted to pond conditions and an important component of balanced wildlife pond ecosystems in the Netherlands and Belgium. Undemanding, cold-hardy, and compatible with other pond cyprinids.
Minimum 500 L well-filtered garden pond. pH 6.5–8.0, GH 5–20, KH 2–10, temperature 4–22°C. Feed quality pond pellets when above 8°C; stop below 5°C in winter. Tolerant of low oxygen conditions. Compatible with other European pond fish: rudd, tench, crucian carp. Schools of 5+ show best natural behaviour. Reproduces readily in ponds with aquatic vegetation.
