Synodontis robbianus
Also known as: Robbé's Synodontis, Robbé's Squeaker
Origin: Central Africa
Synodontis robbianus is a compact, modestly sized mochokid from Central African river systems that infrequently appears in the hobby, making it a genuine find for enthusiasts. Its body bears an attractive combination of spots and fine reticulations on a pale background, a pattern that becomes more defined in well-conditioned adults.
In the aquarium it requires standard soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral conditions appropriate for most Central African catfish, and adapts without difficulty to quality commercial sinking foods. Its relatively modest adult size compared to many Synodontis makes it more accessible for medium-sized aquariums.
Its scarcity in the trade gives it collector appeal; captive-bred specimens, when available, are strongly preferred over wild-caught fish.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 4–14, KH 1–8). Tank: 150 L minimum; rock caves and driftwood; subdued lighting; stable water parameters. Feeding: Sinking pellets, catfish wafers, frozen bloodworm; accepts most standard catfish foods. Breeding: Cave spawner; very rarely documented in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful with medium community fish; suitable with small to medium cichlids and other catfish.
