Sturisoma robustum
Also known as: Robust Whiptail Catfish, Bolivian Sturisoma
Origin: South America (Bolivia — Andean-piedmont rivers)
Sturisoma robustum lives up to its name with a noticeably heavier, more muscular body than most Sturisoma species, an adaptation to the turbulent, high-gradient rivers of Bolivia's Andean foothills where it naturally occurs. It is native to rivers draining the eastern Andean slopes and piedmont of Bolivia, where water is cool, fast-moving, and highly oxygenated.
In the aquarium, Sturisoma robustum requires conditions that reflect its natural habitat: moderate to strong water movement, excellent oxygenation, and temperatures at the cooler end of the tropical range. A powerful external filter with spray bar delivery is recommended, and the aquarium should be generous in size to accommodate both the fish's maximum length and its active lifestyle.
This species is less frequently encountered in the hobby than Sturisoma aureum but is prized for its impressive build and unusual Bolivian provenance. Captive breeding is achievable with appropriate conditioning. The species is likely longer-lived than average for the genus under correct conditions.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate to hard (GH 5–18); high oxygenation and strong flow critical. Tank: 200 L minimum; flat rocks and large driftwood; powerful spray bar filtration. Feeding: Algae wafers, spirulina, blanched courgette; opportunistically grazes wood and rock. Breeding: Cool oxygenated conditions with strong flow trigger; standard Sturisoma care for fry. Compatibility: Peaceful; Bolivian river biotope fish — severums, smaller cichlids, large tetras.
