About

Etheostoma rupestre is a stout, relatively robust darter confined to rocky shoal and fast-riffle habitats in the upper Tennessee and Cumberland river systems. It is closely associated with clean, unsilted rock and cobble substrate, and its cryptic pattern of dark saddles and mottled sides provides excellent concealment against the varied textures of its rocky home. Males develop enhanced contrast and a blue-green wash during breeding.

In the aquarium, Rock Darters are best maintained in a fast-flowing, heavily oxygenated stream biotope with large cobbles and flat rocks providing abundant shelter and territory. They are among the more demanding darters in terms of water quality, being sensitive to siltation, low oxygen, and elevated temperatures — conditions that mirror the pristine habitats they occupy in the wild.

They feed on small aquatic invertebrates with enthusiasm and rarely accept prepared foods. Their robust build and interesting territorial behaviour make them an excellent centrepiece for an Appalachian stream biotope aquarium.

Care Guide

Water: 12–22 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard; very high oxygen, strong riffle-style current. Tank: 60 L minimum; large cobbles, flat rocks, minimal fine sediment; external power filter or powerhead. Feeding: Live/frozen bloodworms, blackworms, aquatic invertebrates; live foods strongly preferred. Breeding: Eggs deposited under flat rocks; male guards territory aggressively during spawning. Compatibility: Compatible with other robust cool-water stream fish; one male per tank unless very large.
