About

Described to science relatively recently, Dawkinsia rohani was long confused with Sahyadria denisonii (the Denison Barb) and remains uncommon in the hobby. It originates from a restricted range in the hill streams of Kerala, India, where it inhabits swift, boulder-strewn streams with crystal-clear, cool, highly oxygenated water. Like the Denison Barb it has a scarlet head stripe, but the black lateral band and overall proportions differ subtly.

In the aquarium, Dawkinsia rohani demands the same high water quality and strong current as its more famous relative. Temperature should be kept in the cooler range for tropical fish, and oxygen levels must be high. A school of five or more thrives best; isolated individuals become stressed and lose colour. The aquarium should be spacious enough for the fish to swim at full speed.

This species feeds eagerly on high-quality pellets and flake, and benefits from regular offerings of frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and artemia to maintain peak colour and conditioning. Its rarity in the trade and spectacular appearance make it highly desirable for specialist collectors.

Care Guide

Water: 18–24°C, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness (GH 6–16); strong current and high dissolved oxygen essential. Tank: 150 L minimum; powerful filtration, significant flow, open mid-water swimming area. Feeding: Omnivore; quality pellets, flake, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, artemia. Breeding: Very rarely bred in captivity; cool, highly oxygenated stream conditions required. Compatibility: Peaceful; best with other fast-water Indian cyprinids; avoid slow-moving tankmates.
