Labeo rohita
Also known as: Rohu, Rohu Carp
Origin: South Asia
Labeo rohita is one of the most commercially important food fish in South Asia, but ornamental forms are occasionally kept in very large aquaria and ponds. Its deep, laterally compressed body is covered in large silver scales with a subtle pink-orange flush, and it can reach extraordinary sizes in the wild. In captivity it requires pristine water, excellent filtration, and an enormous volume — it is primarily a pondfish in the ornamental trade.
Water: 18–30 °C, pH 6.5–8.0, moderately hard water preferred (GH 8–25). Tank: 2000 L minimum, or outdoor pond; exceptional filtration required. Feeding: Omnivore — specialised large pellets, vegetable matter, algae, live invertebrates. Behaviour: Peaceful schooling fish in large groups; solitary in smaller tanks. Compatibility: Only suitable with other very large, robust fish; will eat anything it can fit in its mouth.
