Crenicichla rosemariae
Also known as: Rosemariae Pike Cichlid, Rosemary's Pike Cichlid, São Francisco Jewel Pike
Origin: Rio São Francisco basin, Bahia/Minas Gerais, Brazil
Crenicichla rosemariae is among the most visually stunning pike cichlids available in the hobby, a jewel of the Rio São Francisco basin. Both sexes are colourful but males in peak breeding condition are extraordinary — vivid orange-red suffuses the entire flank, bold dark spotting provides contrast, and individual scales are edged with electric blue iridescence that shimmers under directed lighting.
Endemic to the São Francisco — a river system entirely separate from the Amazon — C. rosemariae has evolved in isolation from most Crenicichla and shares some adaptations with its São Francisco biotope partners. The river runs through largely dry, sun-baked northeastern Brazil and carries moderately warm, slightly hard, neutral water — conditions reproduced reasonably easily in most European aquaria without RO equipment.
At 20 cm it is a manageable size for a 200 L species tank. C. rosemariae is regularly available from specialist cichlid importers and has an established captive breeding record in Europe. It is the definitive recommended species for aquarists wanting a spectacularly colourful, manageable pike cichlid.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5 at 22–28°C; moderate hardness acceptable; São Francisco conditions easy to replicate. Tank: 200 L with sandy substrate, flat stones, and driftwood caves; good lighting to show colouration. Feeding: Frozen carnivore foods and quality pellets; colour-enhancing foods benefit fin pigmentation. Breeding: Cave spawner; biparental care; colour signals breeding readiness clearly. Compatibility: Bonded species pair strongly recommended; showcase fish best displayed alone.
