Nothobranchius rosenstocki
Also known as: Rosenstok's Nothobranch, Rosenstock's Killifish
Origin: Coastal Tanzania
Nothobranchius rosenstocki is a strikingly beautiful annual killifish from seasonal pools in coastal Tanzania. Males display an exceptionally vivid mosaic of blue and red scales, often with intensely coloured fin extensions that develop with age. The species is considered one of the more visually spectacular Nothobranchius and is actively sought by collectors.
Husbandry follows standard Nothobranchius guidelines: a dedicated 30 L species tank, soft acidic water, peat substrate, and daily live or frozen foods. Eggs should be harvested monthly and stored dry for 8–10 weeks before re-wetting. Males are highly territorial and should be kept individually with a harem of females.
N. rosenstocki is available through specialist killifish suppliers and killifish society networks. Its extraordinary colouration makes it well worth the effort of sourcing, and experienced killifish keepers often consider it one of the highlights of the genus.
Water: 22–26 °C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft water (GH 2–8). Tank: 30 L species tank with peat substrate; floating plants reduce male stress. Feeding: Live Artemia, Daphnia, bloodworm, and micro worms; feed daily. Breeding: Harvest peat monthly; dry storage 8–10 weeks before re-wetting triggers hatching. Compatibility: Species tank only; one male per tank to prevent severe fighting.
