Betta splendens
Also known as: Rosetail Betta, Rose Tail Betta, Extreme Halfmoon
Origin: Southeast Asia
The rosetail is produced by heavy branching of the fin rays beyond the standard halfmoon, causing the tail edges to overlap and ruffle like the petals of a rose. While breathtakingly beautiful, the excess fin tissue makes rosetails more prone to fin biting and requires careful water quality management. Best suited to experienced hobbyists.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft water preferred — pristine conditions prevent fin infections. Tank: minimum 20L, low flow; avoid any rough decorations that could snag delicate fins. Feeding: betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia — feed sparingly to maintain condition. Behaviour: males are aggressive; the heavy finnage may invite self-biting under stress. Compatibility: house with very gentle tank mates only; best kept in a species tank.
