Potamotrygon cf. motoro 'Rosette'
Also known as: Rosette Stingray, Rosette River Ray, Motoro Rosette
Origin: Amazon & Orinoco basins (captive population)
Potamotrygon cf. motoro 'Rosette' is a trade designation for motoro-complex specimens characterised by unusually vivid rose-orange ocelli with prominent dark borders, more intense in colour than typical P. motoro individuals. The exact taxonomic status of the Rosette form is debated, and it may represent a regional colour form or a closely related undescribed species within the motoro complex. In the aquarium it behaves identically to standard P. motoro — active, inquisitive, and relatively forgiving for a potamotrygonid. Its outstanding colouration makes it one of the most photographed freshwater rays in the hobby. Care requirements are identical to P. motoro: warm, soft, clean water over fine sand, with a carnivorous diet and meticulous water quality management.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft to moderate (2–10 dGH); zero ammonia/nitrite; nitrate below 20 ppm. Tank: Minimum 500L, fine sand, wide open base; strong external filtration; tight lid to prevent escapes. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms, prawn, mussel, frozen bloodworm; sinking carnivore pellets accepted by established fish. Breeding: Viviparous; vivid pups much sought after; standard motoro conditioning applies; litters 3–10 pups. Compatibility: Large, peaceful fish suitable; avoid fin-nippers or anything that investigates the disc edges.
