Hyphessobrycon roseus
Also known as: Roseus Tetra, Rose Tetra
Origin: Suriname, Guyana
Hyphessobrycon roseus is a soft, translucent pink tetra native to the river systems of Suriname and Guyana. Its body has a delicate rose-quartz quality, appearing almost luminous under bright aquarium lighting. It is one of the gentler and more adaptable Hyphessobrycon species, tolerating a wider pH range than most Amazonian relatives without losing vitality or color. This makes it an excellent choice for hobbyists who want a soft, pastel-toned tetra without the stringent water chemistry requirements of blackwater species. It schools actively and provides gentle movement and subtle color contrast in community planted tanks.
Water: Soft to moderately hard; pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–27 °C. Tolerant of tap water if chlorine removed. Tank: 40 L minimum; planted community tank with open mid-water swimming space. Feeding: Omnivore; flake, micro-pellet, frozen baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and cyclops. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; soft, slightly acidic water; fine plants. Moderately easy to breed. Compatibility: Very peaceful; ideal with other small gentle fish, nano species, and dwarf shrimp-safe setups.
