Heros efasciatus
Also known as: Rotkeil Severum, Red Head Severum, Red Shoulder Severum
Origin: South America
Rotkeil is the German word for 'red wedge', and this name refers to the distinctive red-orange blush that develops across the forehead, nape, and upper face of adult Rotkeil Severums. This colouration is most pronounced in mature males and is one of the most sought-after traits among Severum enthusiasts. The body colouration tends toward a deeper green with more prominent iridescence than standard captive-bred forms.
Wild-collected Rotkeil specimens typically come from the upper Amazon basin, particularly from the Peruvian and Brazilian portions. These fish are collected as adults or near-adults, as juveniles may not yet express the full red colouration that defines the form. Captive-bred Rotkeil lines have been established from collected broodstock and offer a more reliably available source.
Beyond the distinctive head colouration, the Rotkeil Severum shares the peaceful disposition and easy care requirements of other Heros cichlids, making it an excellent large cichlid for the serious aquarist.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 6.0–7.0, slightly soft water preferred for optimal colour expression in wild specimens. Tank: Minimum 250L; natural Amazonian décor with driftwood, leaves, and plants complements this species. Feeding: Omnivore; variety of foods including pellets, frozen prey, and vegetable matter; plant leaves may be nibbled. Breeding: Spawns on flat surfaces; pair bond; red colouration intensifies dramatically during breeding. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; compatible with similarly sized peaceful Amazonian cichlids and large catfish.
