Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Royal Blue Discus, Striped Blue Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Amazon basin, Brazil)
The Royal Blue Discus is a refined domestic Symphysodon strain selectively bred for dense, high-contrast royal-blue horizontal banding across the body. Unlike the solid cobalt variety, Royal Blues exhibit a clear interplay between the blue striping and the lighter base, creating a layered visual depth.
This strain is well-suited to a blackwater biotope aquarium featuring Amazonian driftwood, leaf litter, and dim lighting. Water quality requirements are strict — warm, soft, and slightly acidic conditions are non-negotiable for long-term health and optimal colouration.
Royal Blues are sociable fish that display best in a group. Feeding a varied high-protein diet enhances stripe intensity and promotes the even body growth that makes a specimen truly stand out.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft (1-8 dGH), KH 0-4; weekly 25-30% water changes essential. Tank: Minimum 250 L tall, subdued lighting, smooth driftwood, Echinodorus or Anubias for cover. Feeding: Discus pellets, frozen bloodworm, beefheart, mysis shrimp; feed small amounts 2-3 times daily. Breeding: Spawns on vertical slate or driftwood; biparental care with fry feeding on parental mucus. Compatibility: Ideal with cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras, dwarf Corydoras, and other peaceful Amazonian species.
