The Royal Gramma (Gramma loreto) is one of the most beloved and recognisable reef fish in the hobby, displaying a stunning bicolor pattern of brilliant purple-violet on the front half that transitions sharply to bright yellow-orange on the rear. Hardy, peaceful towards most tankmates, and reef-safe, it is an excellent choice for beginners and experts alike. It often hovers upside-down beneath cave overhangs, which is completely natural behaviour. Captive-bred specimens are regularly available.
Care Guide
Provide ample live rock with caves and crevices for shelter and territory. Peaceful with most reef inhabitants but can be aggressive towards other grammas or similar-shaped fish in smaller systems. Feed a varied diet of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and quality frozen carnivore preparations. Acclimates readily to aquarium conditions and rarely refuses food.
