Panaque nigrolineatus
Origin: Rio Meta/Orinoco, Colombia-Venezuela
Panaque nigrolineatus, the Royal Niger Pleco (L190), is a handsome medium-large pleco from the Orinoco and Amazon basins. Its dark body is adorned with cream-to-gold stripes, and it has striking red eyes. Uniquely, Royal Plecos are xylivores — they grind and digest wood fibre. Driftwood is therefore not optional but biologically required in their setup. They consume algae wafers and vegetables but should always have a piece of soft driftwood available to rasp.
Soft, damp driftwood essential for xylivore diet. Temperature 24–28 °C. Also feed algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched vegetables. Produces significant wood-pulp waste — strong filtration required. Territorial with conspecifics. 200+ L for adults.
