Panaque nigrolineatus
Also known as: Royal Pleco, L010c, Colombian Royal Pleco
Origin: Orinoco River, Colombia
Panaque nigrolineatus L010c is the Colombian variant of the Royal Pleco complex and arguably the most visually spectacular, displaying a near-white to pale cream ground colour with sharply defined dark brown to black transverse banding. The contrast between ground and stripe colour is exceptional, making it highly prized by collectors. It originates from rocky, fast-flowing Colombian Orinoco tributaries where conditions are clean and well-oxygenated.
Care requirements are identical to other L010 forms: large aquarium, heavy driftwood provision, powerful filtration, and a diet centred on wood rasping supplemented with high-quality sinking foods. Its territorial behaviour toward other large plecos is the same as other Royal Pleco variants.
The L010c is the least commonly available of the three L010 forms and is a prized addition to any large South American biotope aquarium. It grows to a slightly smaller maximum size of approximately 38 cm compared to the L010a and L010b forms.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard; strong flow and high-capacity filtration required. Tank: Minimum 300 L; large driftwood pieces essential for rasping behaviour and territorial boundaries. Feeding: Wood rasper primarily; supplement with Repashy, sinking algae wafers, and blanched greens. Breeding: Cave spawner; rarely achieved in captivity; requires very large, mature, stable aquarium setup. Compatibility: Territorial toward other large plecos; peaceful toward unrelated community species.
