Panaque nigrolineatus
Also known as: Royal Pleco, Royal Panaque, L191 Pleco
Origin: South America (Orinoco and Amazon river systems)
The Royal Pleco (Panaque nigrolineatus), classified under the L-number system as L191, is one of the most visually striking of all plecos and a coveted centerpiece fish for large aquarium setups. Native to the Orinoco and Amazon river systems of South America, it features a distinctive pattern of alternating black and white/cream stripes covering its entire body, with bright reddish eyes adding to its dramatic appearance.
Royal Plecos are unique among loricariids in their ability to digest wood — they rasp driftwood with specialized teeth and extract nutrition from the cellulose and associated microorganisms. This makes driftwood not just a décor item but a dietary necessity for this species. Without access to driftwood, their long-term health will suffer.
This is a large fish, growing to 40 cm or more, and requires a spacious aquarium with excellent filtration to handle the significant bioload they produce. They are predominantly nocturnal and spend daylight hours sheltering in caves or under overhanging driftwood. Despite their size, they are peaceful toward most fish but may become territorial toward other large plecos competing for the same hiding spots.
In addition to wood, Royal Plecos should be fed a varied diet including sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, and occasional meaty foods. They are a long-lived species with proper care, representing a serious but rewarding commitment for the experienced aquarist.
Water Parameters: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 23–28°C, GH 4–15. Soft to moderately hard water is preferred. Good filtration is critical due to their high bioload. Maintain strong water flow and excellent oxygenation.
Tank Setup: Minimum 300 liters for a single adult. Provide large pieces of driftwood (essential for dietary and behavioral needs), caves or overhangs for shelter, and robust décor. Substrate can be fine gravel or sand. Powerful filtration is mandatory — these fish produce large amounts of waste.
Feeding: Wood raspers with omnivorous tendencies. Driftwood must always be available. Supplement with sinking algae wafers, high-quality sinking pellets, blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, sweet potato), and occasional meaty foods. Feed in the evening.
Tankmates: Peaceful toward most fish species but territorial toward other large plecos competing for caves. Can be kept with large, robust community fish: cichlids, large tetras, and catfish. Avoid housing with very small fish that may be accidentally harassed.
Health: Hardy when driftwood and varied diet are provided. Without driftwood, digestive issues and stress occur rapidly. Sensitive to poor water quality due to their high bioload — weekly water changes of 30–40% are essential. Watch for ich and bacterial infections.
