Panaque armbrusteri
Origin: Amazon River basin, South America
The Royal Pleco is a majestic loricariid from the Amazon basin recognised by its bold black-and-white striped pattern and striking red eye, making it one of the most visually impressive pleco species available. As a true xylivore (wood-eater), it requires driftwood as a dietary component — not merely as decor — using specialised spoon-shaped teeth to rasp cellulose. It is territorial towards other large plecos but generally peaceful with non-pleco tankmates.
Provide multiple large pieces of driftwood as both food and shelter. Feed a varied diet of algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and driftwood grazing. Keep in spacious tanks with excellent filtration as large individuals produce significant waste. Avoid keeping multiple specimens together unless the aquarium is very large with clearly defined territories. Soft to moderately hard, warm water is preferred.
