Inpaichthys kerri
Also known as: Royal Tetra, Purple Tetra, Blue Emperor Tetra
Origin: Brazil (upper Aripuanã River, Mato Grosso)
Inpaichthys kerri, the Royal or Purple Tetra, is a jewel among small South American tetras. Males are spectacular: a vivid iridescent blue-purple lateral band runs the full body length on a warm orange-red background, creating one of the most striking color combinations seen in small characins. Females show a golden-yellow stripe on a more subdued body tone. Endemic to the upper Aripuanã River basin in Mato Grosso, Brazil, this species requires the soft, warm, acidic blackwater conditions of its native habitat to thrive and display its full color potential. It is best kept in species-specific or quiet community setups with similarly delicate fish.
Water: Soft, warm, acidic; pH 5.5–6.8, temperature 24–28 °C. Indian almond leaves and peat strongly recommended. Tank: 40 L minimum; dense planting, dark substrate, gentle sponge filtration, floating plants for light diffusion. Feeding: Omnivore; micro-pellets, quality flake, frozen baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and cyclops. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; very soft, warm, acidic water required. Condition extensively with live foods. Compatibility: Peaceful; best with other small, gentle blackwater species. Avoid boisterous or hard-water fish.
