About

Sturisoma aureum is arguably the most commonly kept Sturisoma species in the aquarium hobby, having been established in captive breeding programmes for many decades. Native to fast-flowing, well-oxygenated rivers of the Andes foothills in Colombia and Ecuador, it has a strong preference for moderate to strong water current and highly oxygenated conditions. Breeding males develop spectacular elongated caudal filaments and snout bristles (odontodes) that make them among the most impressive catfish in the hobby.

In the aquarium, Sturisoma aureum thrives when provided with a good current, smooth driftwood and flat stones for grazing, and open swimming areas. Unlike the more delicate Farlowella species, it tolerates a moderately wide range of water parameters and is considered one of the more accessible large Loricariids for intermediate keepers. It is particularly well-suited to high-tech planted aquariums where CO₂-driven algae growth provides a near-constant food source.

This species is a prolific spawner when conditioned correctly and has been bred by hobbyists worldwide. Clutches of 50–100+ eggs are laid on flat surfaces and guarded by the male. The fry are large enough to accept algae wafer crumbles and blanched vegetables from day one.

Care Guide

Water: 23–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 3–15); strong oxygenation and moderate current. Tank: 150 L minimum; smooth driftwood, flat stones, open swimming areas; powerhead or spray bar. Feeding: Algae wafers, spirulina, blanched courgette and cucumber; grazes glass and wood algae. Breeding: Prolific; male guards 50–100+ eggs on flat surface; fry are robust and easy to raise. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; peaceful with cichlids, large tetras, barbs, and other catfish.
