Chaetostoma sp.
Also known as: Rubberlip Pleco, Rubbernose Pleco, Bulldog Pleco
Origin: South America (Colombia, Venezuela)
The Rubberlip Pleco (Chaetostoma sp.) is a sturdy and highly effective algae-grazing catfish native to the fast-moving, well-oxygenated rivers and streams of Colombia and Venezuela in South America. The most distinctive feature of this species is its large, rubbery lips — wide and fleshy mouthparts adapted to clamping tightly onto smooth rock surfaces in turbulent water while rasping algae. The body is typically brown to grayish with a spotted or mottled pattern providing natural camouflage against rocky riverbeds. Growing to approximately 18 cm, the Rubberlip is a medium to large pleco that requires a spacious aquarium. Its natural habitat consists of clear, cool, highly oxygenated mountain streams and river rapids — conditions that should be approximated in captivity. Unlike many Amazonian plecos, the Rubberlip prefers cooler water temperatures in the 20–26°C range, which limits compatibility with some tropical species but makes it an excellent choice for temperate community tanks. The Rubberlip is a dedicated herbivore that grazes algae almost exclusively in the wild, supplemented by biofilm and plant material. It is a solitary, peaceful species that ignores other fish occupying different water levels. Males can be territorial toward other plecos of similar size. Smooth rocks, driftwood, and fine substrate replicate its natural environment. Caves and crevices are appreciated for shelter and potential breeding activity.
Tank Setup: A minimum of 150 liters is required to accommodate this species comfortably. Provide a layout with smooth, flat rocks and driftwood to mimic the rocky riverbeds of its native habitat. Fine sand or smooth gravel substrate is preferred. Ensure there are caves or overhangs for shelter. Robust, hardy plants such as Anubias and Java fern are suitable companions.
Water Parameters: Target pH 6.5–7.5, GH 3–15, KH 1–8, and temperature 20–26°C. The cooler temperature preference is an important consideration when selecting tankmates. Oxygenation must be high — use a powerhead or spray bar to increase surface agitation and water movement. Perform 25–30% water changes weekly.
Filtration: Strong filtration with high flow is essential. This species is adapted to fast-moving rivers and thrives in well-oxygenated, clear water. A canister filter with additional powerhead-driven flow is ideal.
Feeding: Algae is the primary food. Supplement with algae wafers, blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, lettuce, spinach), and spirulina-based foods. Unlike carnivorous plecos, the Rubberlip requires predominantly plant-based nutrition and does not need protein-heavy foods as a regular part of its diet.
Social Behavior: Solitary and peaceful toward other fish species. May show territorial behavior toward other large plecos. Keep one per tank unless the setup is very spacious with distinct territories.
Health: Sensitive to low oxygen levels and warm temperatures. Ensure strong surface agitation at all times. Avoid overly warm tropical conditions, which can cause chronic stress and reduced lifespan.
