Chaetostoma milesi
Also known as: Rubbernose Bulldog Pleco, L187, Rubbernose Pleco, Bulldog Pleco
Origin: Andean rivers, Colombia
Chaetostoma milesi, the Rubbernose or Bulldog Pleco (L187), is one of the most commonly encountered Chaetostoma species in the aquarium trade. Its stout, compact body with a large dome-shaped head and the namesake flexible rubber-like suction-cup mouth make it instantly recognisable. It originates from fast-flowing, well-oxygenated Andean foothill rivers in Colombia where algae growth is abundant on smooth boulders.
The Rubbernose Bulldog is a dedicated algae grazer and one of the most effective algae control species available for aquariums in the 20–26°C temperature range. It accepts a wide range of plant-based sinking foods including algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched vegetables. It is entirely peaceful and will not bother tankmates.
Breeding in captivity has been achieved in well-oxygenated, cool aquariums. The Rubbernose Bulldog is an ideal beginner pleco for those keeping cooler aquariums — it is hardy, easy to feed, peaceful, and performs a genuine useful function as an algae controller.
Water: 20–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, moderately soft to moderately hard; strong flow and high oxygenation needed. Tank: Minimum 60 L; smooth rocks, good filtration and flow; no delicate carpeting plants. Feeding: Herbivore; algae wafers, spirulina tabs, blanched courgette, cucumber, and broccoli. Breeding: Egg-layer on rock surfaces; achievable in cool, well-oxygenated, mature aquariums. Compatibility: Peaceful with all community fish; excellent community species for cooler setups.
