Acanthocobitis rubidipinnis
Also known as: Rubidipinnis Hillstream Loach, Redfin Stream Loach
Origin: India, Myanmar, Thailand
Acanthocobitis rubidipinnis is a small, slender loach from India, Myanmar, and Thailand, inhabiting clear, fast-flowing hill streams and rivers with gravel and sand substrates. The species is distinguished by attractive red-orange fin colouration — particularly vivid in males — set against a sandy, mottled body patterned with dark blotches and irregular barring.
In the aquarium this species requires well-oxygenated, clean water with a gentle to moderate current. A longer tank is preferable to allow natural swimming behaviour, and a mix of fine sand, smooth pebbles, and flat stones provides the substrate variety the fish naturally encounters. It is a social species and should be kept in groups of five or more.
Feeding consists of sinking micro foods: small pellets, frozen daphnia, bloodworm, and occasional live microinvertebrates. Unlike hillstream loaches proper, Acanthocobitis does not require a turbulent, oxygen-saturated setup, making it more accessible to the average community aquarist while still demanding clean, quality water.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 20–26°C, well-oxygenated, gentle to moderate flow. Tank: 60 L minimum; fine sand, smooth pebbles, flat stones, cave hides. Feeding: Micro sinking pellets, frozen daphnia, bloodworm, small live invertebrates. Breeding: Not documented reliably in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful with small community fish; do not keep with very aggressive species.
