Melanotaenia rubrivittata
Also known as: Rubrivittata Rainbowfish, Red-striped Rainbowfish
Origin: Papua New Guinea (Fly River)
Melanotaenia rubrivittata is a handsome and relatively straightforward rainbowfish from the Fly River drainage of Papua New Guinea, immediately recognisable by the bold, vivid red mid-lateral stripe that runs along the flanks from behind the eye to the caudal peduncle. This stripe contrasts dramatically against the steel-blue to silver-blue base colouration of the body and is complemented by orange-red accents in the unpaired fins of dominant males.
This species is not as commonly available as the flagship Melanotaenia species but appears regularly through specialist importers. It is a good choice for hobbyists who have kept beginner rainbowfish and want to explore less common New Guinean species. Care requirements are typical for the genus — clean, moderately hard, slightly alkaline water in a spacious, well-filtered aquarium.
Melanotaenia rubrivittata breeds readily and is well-established among specialist breeders. Standard rainbowfish spawning procedures on fine-leaved plants or mops are effective, and the fry are of moderate size and straightforward to raise.
Water: pH 7.0–8.0, temperature 23–28°C, moderately hard; regular water changes maintain stripe intensity. Tank: Minimum 150 L; well-planted sides with open centre; moderate current recommended. Feeding: Quality flake and pellets; supplement with live and frozen invertebrates for best stripe colouration. Breeding: Typical rainbowfish egg scatterer; uses fine plants or mops; fry moderate in size and easy to rear. Compatibility: Peaceful with other medium-sized rainbowfish and community fish.
