The Ruby Tetra (Axelrodia riesei) is a jewel-like nano fish from the Meta River system of Colombia, glowing a vivid deep red under optimal blackwater conditions. At barely 1.5 cm fully grown, it is among the smallest tetras in the hobby. It thrives in heavily planted tanks with dim lighting, tannin-stained water, and soft, acidic conditions that mimic its native Amazonian environment.
Care Guide
Maintain very soft, acidic water (pH 4.5–6.5, GH <5) ideally conditioned with botanical tannins or peat filtration. Provide dense planting and subdued lighting to encourage confident behaviour and full colour expression. Feed micro-sized foods such as micro pellets, baby brine shrimp, and micro worms. Keep in groups of 10 or more for best social behaviour. Avoid bright lights and coarse gravel.
