Scardinius erythrophthalmus
Also known as: Rudd, European Rudd, Red-fin Rudd
Origin: Europe
The Rudd is a widespread European cyprinid found in lakes, ponds, and slow-flowing rivers. It is recognisable by its silver-gold flanks, deep red fins, and upturned mouth — an adaptation for feeding near the water surface on insects and plant material.
Juveniles are particularly attractive and manageable in a large coldwater aquarium, actively schooling and feeding from the surface. Adults grow large and are ultimately best suited to ponds or very large display tanks.
Rudd are compatible with most European coldwater species and add dynamic surface movement to a river biotope setup. They accept a wide range of foods and tolerate cool temperatures throughout the year.
Water: 5–22°C, pH 6.5–8.0, GH 5–15; tolerant of a wide range; thrives without a heater. Tank: minimum 200 L for juveniles; well-planted with surface access; strong filtration for large adults. Feeding: omnivore — floating pellets, flake, frozen brine shrimp, blanched vegetables, and insects. Breeding: spring spawner over aquatic plants; requires large space and seasonal cooling. Compatibility: peaceful; best with other similarly sized European coldwater fish.
