Scardinius erythrophthalmus
Origin: Europe (native)
The Rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus) is a graceful native cyprinid widespread across Western Europe, displaying a silvery body, vivid red-orange fins, and striking golden eyes. A surface and mid-water feeder, it actively controls algae and aquatic insect larvae in garden ponds. Rudd are energetic, social swimmers that bring life and colour to naturalistic ponds and are valued for their ecological role in balanced water gardens.
Keep in groups of 5 or more in a well-planted pond with open swimming areas. Feed commercial pond pellets as a supplement; they will naturally forage on insects and algae. Tolerates a wide temperature range including freezing Belgian winters. Avoid overcrowding as Rudd can grow to 35 cm; ensure adequate pond volume. Excellent companion for other native species such as Tench and Bitterling.
