Synodontis rufigiensis
Also known as: Ruigi Synodontis, Rufiji Squeaker
Origin: East Africa (coastal rivers)
Synodontis rufigiensis hails from East African coastal river drainages, including the Rufiji River system in Tanzania — one of East Africa's major river systems — where it inhabits slow to moderately flowing sections with mixed substrate. It is a medium-sized, subtly patterned species with brown and tan mottling that blends well against natural river substrates.
In captivity it is adaptable to moderately hard, neutral to slightly alkaline water and proves hardy once properly acclimatised. It is less commonly available than many East African Synodontis but is an interesting addition for aquarists wishing to maintain a geographically accurate East African riverine community.
It coexists well with East African cichlids, larger characins and other robust catfish in suitably sized aquariums.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard (GH 8–16, KH 4–10). Tank: 180 L minimum; caves and driftwood; sandy to fine-gravel substrate; moderate flow. Feeding: Sinking pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworm and mysis; good feeder once settled. Breeding: Cave spawner; captive breeding not documented. Compatibility: Peaceful with East African community fish; suitable with medium cichlids and robust catfish.
