Carassius auratus
Origin: Captive bred
The Ryukin is one of the most popular and widespread fancy goldfish varieties, distinguished by its deep, rounded body, pronounced hump immediately behind the head, and dramatic flowing quadruple tail. The red-and-white colouration is a perennial European favourite, offering bold visual contrast. Slightly more robust than oranda types, it is well suited to indoor aquariums and heated garden ponds in temperate climates.
Requires excellent filtration and consistent water quality; fancy goldfish are heavy waste producers. Maintain cool water (10–22°C) and provide at least 150L per adult. Feed a balanced goldfish diet — pellets, vegetables, and occasional live foods. Avoid overcrowding and overfeeding. Regular partial water changes (30–50% weekly) are essential. Do not mix with tropical fish species.
