Aequidens tetramerus
Also known as: Saddle Cichlid, Tetramerus Acara
Origin: South America (Amazon, Orinoco basins)
Aequidens tetramerus is one of the most widespread cichlid species in South America, found across the Amazon and Orinoco basins from Peru to Guyana. Its most distinctive feature is a dark saddle-shaped marking on the upper caudal peduncle region. Males are attractive in golden-green with iridescent scale centres. A hardy and adaptable species, it is moderately territorial during breeding.
Water: 23-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, GH 5-15, KH 1-8; adaptable to a broad range of parameters. Tank: 150L minimum; robust plants, driftwood, and rocky cave structures for territories. Feeding: Omnivore; accepts most foods; earthworms, pellets, and frozen fare all suitable. Behaviour: Moderately territorial during breeding; pairs defend spawning sites aggressively. Compatibility: Can be kept with larger, robust fish; too large and aggressive for small community tanks.
