Polypterus endlicheri
Also known as: Saddled Bichir, Endlicheri Bichir, Saddled Polypterus
Origin: Africa
Polypterus endlicheri is a large polypterid from the Nile, Chad, Niger, and Gambia river systems. It grows to over 75cm in captivity and develops a distinctly muscular body profile as it matures. The bold saddle blotches and large, upturned mouth give it an intimidating appearance suited to a specimen tank.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 7.0-8.0, slightly harder water tolerated from its native Nile habitat. Tank: Minimum 400L, very large caves and wood structures, exceptionally tight and weighted lid. Feeding: Carnivore; whole prawns, earthworms, large pieces of white fish, quality carnivore pellets. Behaviour: More aggressive than smaller bichir species; will intimidate and eat smaller tankmates. Compatibility: Only suitable with very large, robust fish; large Oscar, large pleco, Nile tilapia.
