Puntius sahyadriensis
Also known as: Sahyadri Barb, Khavli Barb, Khavli
Origin: Western Ghats, Maharashtra, India
Puntius sahyadriensis is endemic to a small number of river systems in the Sahyadri mountains of Maharashtra, part of the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot. It is listed as Critically Endangered due to severe habitat loss from dam construction and agricultural encroachment. Males are unusually beautiful for the genus, bearing three to four bold blue-black vertical bars across a silver-olive body with hints of gold iridescence on the scales.
In captivity the species is a model community fish — peaceful, active, and not demanding in its husbandry requirements. It should be kept in groups of at least eight in a well-planted aquarium with slightly acidic, soft water to replicate the clear forest streams of its homeland. It is among the most important fish in the aquarium trade from a conservation perspective.
Captive breeding efforts are particularly valuable for this species. Spawning occurs over fine-leaved plants and can be reliably induced by conditioning with live foods and slightly dropping water temperature. Hobbyists keeping this fish are encouraged to document and share breeding successes.
Water: 22–27 °C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft and clean; replicates clear Western Ghats forest streams. Tank: 80 L minimum; densely planted; driftwood and leaf litter for naturalistic effect. Feeding: Omnivore; pellets, flake, live Daphnia, brine shrimp, vegetable matter. Breeding: Egg-scatter; condition with live food; fry straightforward once hatched. Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal community fish for South Asian or Ghats biotope displays.
