Apistogramma velifera
Also known as: Sail-fin Apisto, Velifera Dwarf Cichlid, Sail-dorsal Apistogramma
Origin: Venezuela
Apistogramma velifera is a Venezuelan blackwater species whose most dramatic feature is the male's remarkably tall, sail-like dorsal fin — proportionally among the largest in the genus, giving the fish an almost theatrical silhouette. Mature males display this impressive fin extended high above the body while patrolling their territory, creating a captivating display.
Native to soft, tannic rivers of southern Venezuela, A. velifera requires classic blackwater conditions — soft, acidic water with low conductivity — to develop its best finnage and coloration. The body is attractively colored in blue-green iridescence with warm yellow-orange ventral tones.
This species is moderately demanding and best suited to intermediate hobbyists with experience maintaining soft-water setups. It is a rewarding species that uses its impressive dorsal fin in elaborate breeding displays worth observing.
Water: Soft, acidic — pH 4.5–6.5, temperature 25–29°C, low conductivity. Tank: 80 L; height matters — tall tank allows full dorsal fin display; caves, plants, leaf litter. Feeding: Live and frozen invertebrates; quality pellets accepted once settled. Breeding: Cave spawner; female guards fry; moderately challenging. Compatibility: Small peaceful Venezuelan blackwater species; hatchetfish, pencilfish, cardinal tetras.
