Leiarius pictus
Also known as: Sailfin Catfish, Spotted Sailfin Pimelodus
Origin: Upper Amazon basin
Leiarius pictus hails from the upper Amazon basin and shares the genus's defining tall dorsal fin, though its pattern differs markedly — a pale cream body covered in bold dark spots gives it a distinctly leopard-like appearance. It is somewhat smaller than L. marmoratus, making it marginally more manageable.
Like its congener, L. pictus is an omnivore and accepts a varied diet. It is an active fish that patrols its territory confidently, particularly at night. The dorsal fin spine is sharp and can deliver a painful puncture if the fish is handled carelessly during maintenance.
The species is periodically available through specialist importers and commands a premium due to its relatively limited export. In well-maintained large aquaria it is long-lived and becomes a genuinely impressive showpiece fish.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard; consistent water quality essential. Tank: Minimum 1000L; robust filtration, open floor space, few decorations. Feeding: Omnivore; large sinking pellets, prawns, mussels, occasional plant-based foods. Breeding: No captive breeding reported. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; keep with large, robust South American species only.
