Crenuchus spilurus
Origin: Amazon and Guiana Shield, South America
The Sailfin Characin (Crenuchus spilurus) is a fascinating and atypical characin from the Amazon and Guiana Shield where males develop an impressively tall, sail-like dorsal fin used in courtship displays. Unlike most tetras, it is a predominantly carnivorous ambush predator that lurks near wood and leaf litter waiting for small invertebrates and fish. Best kept as a pair or small group in a species-specific or carefully chosen community setup with no small tankmates.
Maintain very soft, acidic, tannin-stained water (pH 4.5–6.5, GH <6) with driftwood, leaf litter, and dim lighting mimicking Amazonian blackwater habitats. Feed live and frozen prey such as small invertebrates, Daphnia, mosquito larvae, and micro worms. Avoid keeping with very small fish that may be predated. A peaceful but predatory species that requires appropriate space and tankmates.
