Pterygoplichthys multiradiatus
Also known as: Sailfin Pleco, Orinoco Sailfin Pleco, L022
Origin: South America (Amazon, Orinoco)
Pterygoplichthys multiradiatus is a widespread and adaptable large loricariid from the Amazon and Orinoco basins. Its tall dorsal fin, brownish reticulated patterning, and massive size make it a dramatic centrepiece in large aquariums. It is a highly effective algae grazer but requires a very large tank at maturity.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, adaptable; heavy filtration required for high waste output. Tank: Minimum 400L; large driftwood; open sand areas; robust hardscape. Feeding: Herbivore; algae wafers, sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, driftwood. Behaviour: Nocturnal; largely peaceful; can disturb lighter decor with powerful body. Compatibility: Large community tanks; avoid with other Pterygoplichthys due to territorial grazing.
