Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps
Origin: Amazon and Orinoco basins, South America
The Sailfin Pleco (Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps) is one of the most impressive loricariids available, with a dramatically tall dorsal fin carrying 12 or more rays that fans out like a sail, covered in a beautiful reticulated pattern of dark spots on brown. Native to the Amazon and Orinoco drainages, it is a popular, adaptable algae-grazer that grows into a spectacular display animal. Its outstanding dorsal fin and bold patterning set it apart from most other large plecos.
Provide a large aquarium (400L+) with multiple caves and driftwood for shelter and grazing. Feed algae wafers, blanched vegetables (cucumber, zucchini), and driftwood grazing; supplement with sinking pellets and occasional protein. Excellent water quality and robust filtration are essential given the significant bioload. Generally peaceful but may squabble with other large plecos over territory.
