Synodontis velifer
Also known as: Sailfin Synodontis, Sailfin Squeaker
Origin: Congo Basin, Central Africa
Synodontis velifer is one of the largest and most dramatically finned species in the genus, developing a tall, broad dorsal fin that, when fully erect, almost equals the fish's body depth. Native to the Congo basin, it inhabits deep, slow-moving river channels where its powerful build and large fins allow it to manoeuvre effectively.
In the aquarium this species demands a very large tank from the start and the commitment to house a fish potentially exceeding 40 cm. Despite its imposing size it is not overtly aggressive toward non-catfish tankmates of comparable size, but any smaller fish are at risk of predation.
Excellent filtration and consistent large water changes are essential to maintain water quality for this high-waste-producing species. Its longevity — potentially exceeding 25 years — makes it one of the most long-term commitments in the freshwater hobby.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 5–15, KH 2–10). Tank: 500 L absolute minimum; very large caves and horizontal overhangs; high-capacity filtration essential. Feeding: Large sinking pellets, prawns, earthworms, fish fillet; needs substantial daily food intake. Breeding: Not documented in captivity; presumed cave spawner; extremely challenging at this scale. Compatibility: Keep only with robust large fish over 15 cm; suitable companions include large cichlids and large barbs.
