Cryptoheros sajica
Also known as: Sajica Cichlid, T-Bar Cichlid, T-Bar Convict
Origin: Central America (Pacific slope rivers of Costa Rica and western Panama)

The Sajica Cichlid (Cryptoheros sajica), formerly classified as Archocentrus sajica, is a beautiful small cichlid endemic to the Pacific slope rivers of Costa Rica and western Panama. It is one of the more elegant Cryptoheros species, displaying sky-blue iridescent spots and scale edges against a beige-to-olive background, with subtle vertical barring that becomes more pronounced when stressed or spawning.
Sajica Cichlids grow to about 10–12 cm and are considered relatively peaceful by Central American cichlid standards. They form stable monogamous breeding pairs and show biparental care of eggs and fry, which makes them interesting to breed and observe. Outside of spawning, they are generally tolerant of non-cichlid tankmates.
They prefer slightly alkaline, moderately hard water that mirrors their native Central American highland streams. A well-planted aquarium with rocky caves and hiding spots suits them well and helps reduce aggression by providing territory boundaries.
Like many Central American cichlids, they become more territorial during spawning. Keeping them in a species-appropriate setup with enough space prevents conflicts. The Sajica Cichlid is an excellent introduction to Central American cichlid keeping for hobbyists interested in moving beyond common South American species.
Water Parameters: pH 7.0–8.0, temperature 22–27°C, GH 8–20. Slightly alkaline, moderately hard water mimics their native Costa Rican streams. Stable parameters with weekly water changes are important for long-term health.
Tank Setup: Minimum 120 liters for a pair. Provide rocky caves, overhangs, and hiding spots for territory establishment. Live plants are tolerated — use robust species like Anubias and Java fern. Open sandy areas in the center for foraging and courtship displays. Good filtration with moderate flow.
Feeding: Omnivores that accept quality cichlid pellets, flake food, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and earthworms. Include some vegetable content (spirulina flakes, blanched vegetables) in the diet. Feed twice daily.
Tankmates: Best kept as a pair in a species tank or with other robust, non-cichlid species as dithers (fast-moving tetras or barbs). Can be kept with other Central American cichlids in very large tanks with clear territory boundaries. Avoid highly aggressive cichlids.
Breeding: Open or cave spawners that lay eggs on flat rocks or in caves. Parents guard and fan eggs, then herd free-swimming fry. Fry accept baby brine shrimp and micro foods. Remove pair from community setup during spawning if aggression spikes.
