Neocaridina davidi var.
Also known as: Sakura Red Shrimp, Sakura Shrimp
Origin: Captive bred (originally East Asia)
The Sakura Red Shrimp occupies the sweet spot in the Neocaridina red grading ladder, displaying more intense and consistent red colouration than standard Cherry Shrimp but at a more accessible price than top-grade Painted Fire Red specimens. Sakura-grade females display opaque red colouration on most of the body, with some transparency remaining on the legs and head.
This makes the Sakura an excellent choice for beginners wanting a visually impressive Neocaridina without paying top-grade prices, as well as for aquarists looking to build large colonies quickly. Sakura-grade shrimp are among the most commonly available quality Neocaridina in the hobby.
Like all Neocaridina, the Sakura Red is undemanding, highly tolerant, and breeds prolifically in stable conditions. It grazes constantly on biofilm and algae and is an excellent natural algae controller in planted tanks.
Water: 18–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 6–15, KH 2–8; most dechlorinated tap water suitable. Tank: minimum 20 L with plants and hiding spots; dark substrate improves colour contrast. Feeding: algae wafers, blanched vegetables, spirulina-based foods, shrimp pellets. Breeding: easy; females carry 20–30 eggs for 3–4 weeks; no special fry care needed. Compatibility: excellent community shrimp; keep with peaceful nano fish and other Neocaridina.
