Apistogramma salpinction
Also known as: Salpinction Apisto, Trumpet-blotch Apistogramma
Origin: Peru
Apistogramma salpinction is among the rarest Apistogramma species in cultivation — a Peruvian endemic virtually unknown outside of specialist circles. Its most distinctive feature is a peculiar trumpet- or funnel-shaped lateral blotch pattern on the midflank, unlike the simple oval or round blotches seen in the majority of the genus.
Native to highly acidic, mineral-poor forest streams, this species has very specific water chemistry requirements that must be met for it to thrive. Given its extreme rarity and the difficulty of obtaining specimens, A. salpinction is primarily a species for dedicated Apistogramma specialists with the infrastructure to maintain blackwater conditions reliably.
Any opportunity to acquire captive-bred A. salpinction should be taken seriously, as wild collection is extremely limited and captive propagation remains rare.
Water: Extreme blackwater — pH 5.0–6.5, temperature 25–28°C, very low TDS. Tank: 60 L specialist setup; leaf litter, driftwood, RO water with tannin conditioning. Feeding: Live micro-prey essential initially; frozen accepted over time. Breeding: Cave spawner; very rare in captivity; specialist-level challenge. Compatibility: Species tank strongly preferred due to rarity and sensitivity.
