Xiphophorus maculatus var.
Also known as: Salt and Pepper Platy, Speckled Platy
Origin: Captive bred (originally Mexico/Guatemala)
The Salt and Pepper Platy is a captive-developed Xiphophorus maculatus variety in which a dense scattering of fine black melanophores over a white or pale silver base creates the characteristic salt-and-pepper speckled appearance. The pattern is evenly distributed across the entire body and can extend into the fins.
This variety is unusual among platies in its speckled rather than solid or two-tone colouration, making it a distinctive addition to community aquariums where most other platies display solid or barred patterns. The speckle density varies between individuals and can intensify with age.
Care requirements are identical to all Xiphophorus maculatus varieties — this is a forgiving, adaptable, and prolific fish.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate to hard water; highly adaptable. Tank: 60 L minimum; standard community setup with plants and open swimming areas. Feeding: Accepts all foods readily; varied omnivore diet maintains best condition. Breeding: Very prolific; speckle pattern density varies in fry; select densely patterned individuals. Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal community fish for all non-aggressive tankmates.
