Trichromis salvini
Also known as: Salvini Cichlid, Tricolor Cichlid, Yellow-belly Cichlid
Origin: Central America
Trichromis salvini is distributed across Atlantic-slope rivers and coastal lagoons from Mexico through Guatemala and Belize to Honduras. It is an instantly recognisable species with vivid yellow body colouration, a black lateral stripe, and striking red-orange lower flanks and belly that intensify dramatically during breeding. Despite its relatively modest size, it is one of the most aggressive small-to-medium Central American cichlids and must be managed carefully.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderate hardness (GH 8–18). Tank: 250L minimum for a pair; dense hiding spots and visual barriers to manage aggression. Feeding: Omnivore; high-quality pellets, frozen foods, and occasional vegetable matter. Behaviour: Aggressive relative to size; highly territorial; spawning pairs become very defensive. Compatibility: Keep with other robust cichlids significantly larger than this species to avoid casualties.
