Betta splendens
Also known as: Samurai Betta, Heavy Dragon Scale Betta, Armour Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
The samurai is an advanced dragon scale variant where the metallic scaling extends over the head and operculum as well as the body, giving the fish an almost fully armoured appearance. The intensity of the plating is greater than standard dragon scale bettas and the fish have an imposing, regal look. Eye monitoring is important as in all heavy dragon scale fish.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — monitor eyes regularly for scale overgrowth. Tank: minimum 20L, planted; provide visual cover to reduce stress and excessive flaring. Feeding: carnivore — betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia; twice daily. Behaviour: males are aggressive — one per tank; the heavy scaling does not affect activity level. Compatibility: peaceful community setups; avoid situations that stress the fish and trigger constant flaring.
